Reading (not profession-specific) – duration 60 minutes
(Same content for all health professions, it involves reading and understanding different types of texts on health-related topics.
Listening (not profession-specific) – duration 45 minutes
It presents the same content for all health professions and involves understanding a range of spoken health-related materials such as consultations and patient visits.
Writing (profession-specific) – duration 45 minutes
Specific for the profession, it is based on typical work situations. The task is to write a letter, usually a letter sending a patient to a specialist. Sometimes, especially for some professions, a different type of letter is required: e.g. a transfer or discharge letter or a letter to advise or inform a patient, an assistant or a group.
Speaking (profession-specific) – two role-plays – duration 20 minutes
This part of OET is set to typical work situations and uses materials specifically designed for your profession. In each role play, the candidate takes on his or her professional role (e.g. nurse or pharmacist) while the interlocutor plays a patient, a client or a relative or a patient’s assistant. In veterinary science, the interlocutor is the animal’s owner or companion.
