Turkish was the language of the Ottoman Empire. The Arabic alphabet was used for the written form until 1928, when in the efforts of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk to modernize Turkey, the Arabic alphabet was banned and the Latin alphabet was adopted in a slightly varied version.
Turkish is an agglutinative language, like Hungarian, Japanese and Finnish: this means that prefixes and suffixes are used to change the meaning of words. It has a fairly simple and very logical grammar, with very few irregularities and exceptions.
